I bought the T-34-85M with the expectation of getting a Soviet medium crew trainer that's better than the Matilda IV, so far I have not been disappointed. I've played 10 games so far and have done reasonably well, although I could probably have done a bit better, I tend to derp my first few games in new tonks. I can also say that it unfortunately doesn't get preferential mm, which is disappointing, anyway.

The biggest difference between the 85M and the normal 34-85 is the 75mm UFP (I'm not sure what the angle is, but it looks around 55o, so it's roughly 135mm effective), while it doesn't seem like a huge boost on paper it provides two noticeable advantages, the 85M is much better at bullying lower tiers who are simply unable to pen the UFP. More importantly it allows the 85M to poke corners without getting lolpenned as the UFP can become quite strong against other mediums when angled a lot, which corners allow you to do without exposing your weak side armour. Having said that the UFP isn't very good against most tier 6's when head on (unlike the Jumbo Sherman) and doesn't really do anything against >160mm pen guns. In short the increased thickness is a nice boost but one that doesn't have huge implications for its survivability.

The next distinguishing difference, the gun, is probably the weakest part of the tonk, with both lackluster DPM and gun handling it's not great, although it does have good alpha damage compared to the other tier 6 mediums, in tier 8 games the poor pen is also a serious liability, a shame it doesn't have preferential mm.

Lastly, the mobility, arguably the most important aspect of a medium, is a lot better than what I was expecting, it accelerates slower than the regular T-34 so it's slightly sluggish but it is more than capable of reaching its top speed which is quite fast, the traverse rate seems to be roughly the same. Comparatively it's much faster than something like the Pz.Kpfw IV Schmalturm but not quite as mobile as the Easy Eight, so the mobility is acceptably good.

In summary, the T-34-85M is a solid Soviet medium premium tonk, with decent armour for bullying, a gun that is out of place in tier 8 games but is otherwise workable and mobility that is much better than the T26E4, it's now possible to train T-62A/140/T-54 crews without having to play the mind-numbingly bad Matilda IV. It also looks pretty cool, although that doesn't quite make up for the lack of preferential mm. So if you don't mind that it sees tier 8s, I would recommend it as a decent Soviet medium that trains crews while still being fun to actually play.

Here are some replays, I had another two but they didn't seem to upload properly, bear in mind the replays aren't demonstrations of super good gameplay, they just give a general idea of what it's like to play.

Actually first question.  What are the potential equipment and consumable setups, and why?

Also does it get vert stabs? If so I would go the usual rammer, vert stabs, optics combo. If not vents instead?

And how much ammo does it carry, seems to need quite a bit of gold (tier 8 matches + t150s) but would like to not run out of AP in tier 6 matches (so I can make a decent profit).

A rammer and GLD drive are necessary to help alleviate the poor DPM and gun handling. Despite the poor view range (350) I feel that optics are still the third best choice as 385m is pretty good at tier 6, plus my crew has BiA (one of the advantages of a premium tonk) so the view range ends up being pretty good. Having said that optics can easily be switched for vents if you don't scout very much or would prefer the minor boost (which would be helpful with the poor stats on the gun).

My consumable setup is what I would recommend, while food is a good option if you are OP like Fruity and can control with a reasonable degree when/where you are shot it's not great for me because I derp a lot, so my fuel tanks tend to get damaged.

The only tier 6 mediums that get vert stabs are 'MURICAN mediums, because FREEDOM, actually, because late-war M4 Shermans had vert stabs, the Communists have to wait until the T-44 before they get that glorious 20% reduction to bloom. I would recommend vert stabs on every tonk that can use it, not using a vert stab to me is like taking a full HE loadout on a T-54.

Ammo count is 60, I am going with 35/25 AP/APCR because I can. I wouldn't run out of AP unless it was an ultra-hard carry and I was spamming a lot of shots.

Full gold will be negative credits because the damage to credits ratio isn't great (unlike the IS-6) and tier 6 premiums don't get a big credit bonus just for clicking battle, if you shoot around 50/50 you will make maybe ~20,000 on an average game.

Is the gun the same one that is on the standard T-34-85?  Along with all of it's characteristics? The wiki does not show any of this tanks attributes.

Well, its a shame it came out at the same time as we are due to receive the reward tank otherwise I would have got it.

The matilda must have been the worst freaking crew trainer ever introduced to mankind

I played it last night and quite liked it.

I had a few tankers stop in their tracks when they saw it so it is not well known it is available.

With the angling the front can bounce shots from an AT -8 at 300m and still get hits in on the copula.

It is more mobile than I thought it would be, the only downside is the DPM.

I am just starting my Ruski mediums with the KV 13 so it will prove very useful as a trainer.

The gun is the same as the 85mm S-53 although a bit longer reload I think.

Jarlian has both and since it missed the 907 it will be getting one of these. Currently grinding out the Cent 7 so both Tilly variants will be surplus soon.
