So I have read the wiki and I see that the first skill requires 210,060 XP.  Now is this per crew or per crew member?  ie if I have a crew of 4 then the tank needs to have done 840,240 XP - that's around 2,000 battles per tank if I only average 400 XP per battle!  How does the average performing tanker ever get skills or perks?

When you finish a battle and get for example 400 tank XP, each of your crew member also get 400 crew XP each.

Play a bucket load and try to avoid retraining or reskilling with credits.

You only need that 210,060 XP once, as every crew member picks up the experience you've won in a battle. The usual multipliers apply too, so make use of daily doubles, personal reserves, and accelerated crew training to speed up the process.

That said, it should illustrate why skills are almost always preferred over perks when grinding, as you'd have to play hundreds of battles before getting any benefit from them. Resetting skills for perks once you've got to 100% is a better way of doing things.

If all else fails you can use your free XP to increase the skill of a crew member. I wouldn't recommend it beyond getting your commanders Sixth Sense though. None of the other perks are that much of a game changer plus you'll need some to skip the stock modules on tanks that are painful grinds.
