I just learned today that the Taiwanese Navy still operates some ex-American subs which are so old that not only do they still use the American WWII-era Torpedo Data Computer, they receive technical support on repairing them not from the American Navy, but from staff at American naval museums.

There's some kinda irony in one of the world's top chip-making and computer-producing countries running a navy which still uses electro-mechanical proto-computers which take up a huge chunk of the conning tower in a sub and which could probably be replaced by something the size of a small ipad (and only then because you need a screen/input - otherwise you could probably make it smaller than a micro thumb drive).

that may be why the current admin announced that they were looking into domestically building submarines. the previous admin got so cushy with China that domestic development of weapon systems was low priority.

Well Tomas, TW has recently/is acquiring M1's (I weep).
I believe the first small batch is already here... heard from ex-service friends and saw a couple of pics somewhere. Can't find them (ie, not googling, at work)

Of those in selection, I'd say the Type 10, despite the very high cost which is likely due to the nano-crystal steel (fancy name for a type of ultra-hard steel).

While it ain't Asian, my personal favorite MBT is the French Lerlerc [pronounced LeClair], I'd argue that it is the best MBT to date and most countries are fools for not getting them.

Not everyone is a fan of the higher reverse speed.

JK, it's a great tank as well.

It has GALIX XD I am particularly interested in the anti-personnel capability. Now before you start making jokes about retreating, do know that smoke and reverse is not exclusive to the French.

From Wikipedia:
"In a single incident; one Leclerc tank was hit and penetrated in the driver's hatch by an ATGM, possibly of Konkurs or Konkurs-M type, resulting in the death of the driver and injuries to the legs of the commander. None of these tanks were completely destroyed."

So, I think it's pretty okay protection-wise so far. Poor driver, though. As for what makes it "better" than other MBT's? I think that question is slightly flawed. It's easy for us armchairs to ask that but for those who intend to use it, it will depend what they design and use it for. It will be like asking someone why they designed their own tank when there's cheaper Russian tanks already out there? (As an example)

fair point. btw i thought chally 2 has the best protection so far? shame it's preety dated though, and ridiculously slow compared to its peers (Abrams and Leo 2)

so...what? a Leo2 hull and a Leclerc turret?

actually no...that hull isn't a Leopard's. must be a redesign or something, but that turret definetly looks like a Leclerc turret

Though I have to give the Iranian Karrar a nod for being by far the sexiest-looking modern MBT. :girl:
