Somewhere in the middle you will hear Chieftain mention Knudsen - that refers to William S. Knudsen, General Motors industrialist who was roped into the War Department (some might argue gang-pressed) by FDR to plan how to convert USA's civil industry into a war industry. At the age of 61.

It is frankly incredible just how much normal industry continued in US despite the massive amount of war production. While the term Hyperpower is a relatively new one (used to describe the US position post Soviet Union collapse) it is one that could very well have applied to the US during the 1930's and 1940's as well.

Knudsen's quote: "We won because we smothered the enemy in an avalanche of production, the like of which he had never seen, nor dreamed possible." Pretty much sums up how America won.
