I played this tank last year but sold it because I got tired of it and wanted to shift lines instead. Now that I have all the lines I was interested in, I felt like coming back to this one. I purchased back the ARL 44, and played a bunch of battles.

These battles were ridiculous. All these matches had me bottom tier most of the time, and if not bottom then middle. The aim time was junk. Takes forever to aim and when it does, shots still miss at long range. The armor is also terrible, can't stay back and snipe because the VIEW RANGE is also junk, plus the horrible aim time I just mentioned.

I keep dying. No matter how I angle, where I go, I keep dying. I never felt so frustrated and annoyed with a tank before.

Also, I noticed it seems worse than i was last year when I played it. So how on earth am I supposed to enjoy this tank and get past it without suffering and making my stats worse in the progress??

What gun do you use? 90mm or 105mm? Tbh ARL is better than AMX M4.

90mm. It has to be a close range just to not miss, but that puts me at risk of getting blown to bits. Not even sidescraping works on this thing...

most of the crew are 61% (But the commander is 81 and gunner 71 taken from another tank) No skills exept for smooth ride which is at 19%) No equipment.

never use crew under 75% and even then use 100% crew if you can. The crew will be the biggest limiting factor for you.

Here's the problem.

Try to get at least 75% trained crew with silver. Anything less is no go and hampers your tanks' performance really badly.

Use the 105mm and go full APCR, then you shall succeed.

Cause for some bizarre reason, this gun's premium round deals 30 extra damage then its standard round, and has a ton more penetration.

Conclusion: when in doubt in the ARL 44, use the 105mm gun and set your premium round to your "1" key

I think you answer the reason yourself. Good crew + correct equipment makes your tank a tad bit better.

So when you bought the tank you put a 50% crew in it, amd are complaining about its performance? Until you have a 100% crew you aren’t really in much of a position to complain about a tanks handling or performance.

Whilst it might be nice to hear buzzwords like “view range” and “armour” I’m not sure you really understand the concepts or at least their practical application - at least this is what your 45% overall winrate and <40% winrate in the ARL says to me. Having 150mm effective armour is one thing, but when you are facing a tank with >200mm pen it will count for nought.

@OP, short answer is that crew proficiency matters (crew skill follows a log scale that rises very sharply up till around the 85% mark and steadily declines from there).

Long answer is that the ARL44 is a hybrid heavy that mixes a bunch of strengths and weaknesses together.

  • It has crappy turret armor, but decent frontal hull armor (against meds and some heavies).
  • Gun handling is decent, better than the KV-series, but worse than the Churchill. With the 105mm you have the hardest hitting heavy tank in tier with a decent dpm to boot. And yes this particular 105mm gun has the peculiarity of giving extra damage when you fire its APCR round, the only tank gun to do so.
  • Mobility is also decent for a heavy tank, which makes the ARL flexible enough to play like a slow med.

Ace game back when I was playing the ARL, 105mm gun.

  • You can see my mobility match the medium tanks (tail-end of the pack, but at least I'm at the fight when it matters rather than just catching the last dregs)
  • 320++ alpha, and a decent reload speed.
  • Hull armor is decent when angled - you can see me bullying the O-I Exp by a combination of superior firepower, and a deflected shot to my side-armor.
  • view-range not shown here, but while you are not as blind as a Russian heavy, I still won't want to spot except as part of my attack route.
