I had accumulated a few boxes in the last couple of hours of game play (not many, 5-10ish).  I just got a message saying Holiday Ops is now finished and the screens have gone away.

 

How do I open those boxes to claim my rewards for the boxes I had earned today? I can't see a way.   I'm more interested in the bonus stuff like silver, repair kits etc

Once the event has finished you do not have access.

I do understand that the tech tree discounts earned on christmas season will disappear after the updated of WG.

 

Will the new recruits dissappear as well if we have not assigned them to their respective tanks?

No they don't.

You can access reward by click on bottom right corner. It has message say that you need to claim the reward before update 1.4 release. If the message not appear, please change server that you currently play.
