I was not quick enough to find out if they were using the Soviet "rounded and sloped" approach, or the German "flat and thick as" approach.
They didn't steal the rails, but huge parts of the security fence were stolen to be used as building material.
And the fence was dug 2m into the ground, either side filled with razor wire, that small panel mesh type material which is impossible to climb and topped with razor wire. The locals just came along with battery powered angle grinders and cut it off. They were talking about using drones to patrol and protect the fence.
Theft was so endemic that a couple of 800 tonne excavators had burnt down because people were on them stealing fuel while they were being operated.
Because there is no real property rights people can walk through parts of the mine. In 2012 a couple of kids drowned while swimming in some mining voids and an exploration crew was lucky to be saved from a mob.
These were serious people. In 1977 there was an explosion at an underground coal mine which killed about 80 miners. Their families rose up and slaughtered the entire East German mine management and families as payback. Was known as the Moatize Massacre.
